Aims:
This module aims to provide students with an awareness of children's abilities in areas explored in recent linguistically-driven research into first language acquisition, and of theories that seek to account for these. |
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:
give an account of the principal claims made regarding the processes and linguistic outcomes of first language acquisition appraise critically the sources of evidence for the above organise their knowledge and articulate their arguments effectively in writing, both under timed conditions and in assessed essays |
Additional outcomes:
The module also aims to encourage the development of autonomous learning through the critical reading of research work on first language acquisition. |
Outline content:
A range of explanatory accounts of first language acquisition, including the cognition hypothesis, distributional learning, maturationism and parameter-setting within a learnability framework, as well as environmentally-driven and processing approaches including connectionism. |

Assessment:
Coursework Students will write one essay of 2,000 words. The essay will count towards assessment, and must be submitted by the last day of the term in which the course is taught. Relative percentage of coursework: 33% Examinations: One 2-hour paper requiring answers to 2 questions from 6, to be taken at the time of the Part 2 or 3 examinations. Requirements for a pass: A mark of 40% overall. Reassessment arrangements: (awaiting university-wide statement) |
