GO2I5: Analytical Geochemistry for Environmental Samples

Module Provider:

Soil Science

Number of credits:

10 [5 ECTS credits]

Level:

I (Intermediate)

Terms in which taught:

Spring

Module Convenor:

Dr A Parker

Pre-requisites:

GO2A4

Co-requisites:

Modules excluded:

Current from:

2004

Aims:
To teach the principles of applicability of the main (largely instrumental) techniques for the geochemical analysis of environmental materials. To show how to apply these techniques to typical geochemical problems.

Assessable learning outcomes:
Students should be able to apply, undertake, and assess the results of the major methods of geochemical analysis, and also understand the criteria for choosing the appropriate techniques for particular problems.

Additional outcomes:
A rigorous training in the recording of the methodology and results of laboratory analysis

Outline content:

  • Sampling strategies and techniques for all types of geological material
  • Preparation of solid and liquid samples for analysis
  • Field analytical methods
  • Colorimetric and gravimetric analyses
  • Atomic absorption and inductively-coupled plasma spectrometry
  • X-ray fluorescence analysis
  • X-ray diffraction analysis
  • Electron microscopy
  • Isotope analysis
  • Size analysis
  • Cathodoluminescence

  • Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
There will be a one-hour lecture each week, followed by a short break and then an exercise and/or demonstration

    Contact hours:

      Autumn Spring Summer
    Lectures   10
    Tutorials/seminars
    Practicals   20
    Other contact (eg study visits)

    Total hours   30

Number of essays or assignments   c.5 assessed pieces of work
    Other (eg major seminar paper)

    Assessment:
    Coursework
The practical exercises each student undertakes will be marked weekly. It should be possible to complete the writing-up largely during the timetabled hours.
    Relative percentage of coursework :
    40%
    Examinations
A one and a half hour written paper requiring two questions from four to be answered. This contributes 60% of the total assessment
    Requirements for a pass
    40% overall
    Reassessment arrangements
    Re-examination in September only.
