Aims:
This module aims to enable students to improve their skills in reading Ancient Greek at a second year advanced level. In addition, students will gain practice in the analysis of the literary texts studied.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:

  • translate Ancient Greek at a second year advanced level;
  • understand the Ancient Greek grammar and vocabulary appropriate to the translation of certain Greek texts;
  • analyse the literary art and context of the texts studied.

  • Additional outcomes:
    The module also encourages the development of skills in written communication and work in groups.

    Outline content:
    The module meets for two hours each week on the translation and discussion of a selected AncientGreek text. It also meets for one hour each week for a systematic revision of Ancient Greek grammar. Representative texts to be read include Plutarch's Life of Themistokles, Plato's Symposium, Homer's Odyssey, Aristophanes' Archarnians.

    Themodule is conducted in seminars encouraging participation by students in translation and discussion.

    Assessment:
    Coursework:
    Formative assessment will take the form of tests of knowledge of grammar and the ability to translate, as deemed appropriate. Summative assessment will consist of one piece of written work each term, either an exercise in commentary and analysis of a passage or an essay on a more general theme.
    Relative percentage of coursework : 33%
    Examinations:
    One three-hour paper examining knowledge of grammar (and metre, when poetic texts have been read) and skills in translation and analysis.
    Requirements for a pass:
    An overall mark of 40%.
    Reassessment arrangements:
    Re-examination in September. Coursework will be carried forward if it bears a confirmed grade of 40% or more. Otherwise it must be resubmitted by 1 September.
