Aims:
This module aims to build on abilities acquired by students during the second year of their degree, to research and lead seminar discussions on a topic in the field of contemporary art and culture related to their studio practice. It provides the opportunity for students to reflect critically on their own practice and identify and examine relevant critical debates. It further aims to encourage the development of informal critical discussion between students outside of the seminar programme. Single subject students will begin to consider a possible topic of research for their final year contextualised study (FA3HCS).

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to show:

  • differentiate, identify and critically assess issues in relation to their chosen topic of research in relation to other critical positions in oral presentation
  • develop and articulate a mature and critically responsible position with regard to their own practice and its relation to the seminar topics
  • locate and assemble the relevant information from library resources
  • participate effectively in critical debate in seminar discussions by showing good humour and respect for the different views of others

  • Additional outcomes:
This module aims to encourage the development of student's effectiveness in group situations.. Students will build on their research skills in the relevant use of books, catalogues, magazine articles, reviews and their IT skills by use of relevant web resources and databases.

    Outline content:
Students will identify specific issues raised in their studio practice, they will assess a range of critical opinions in relation to their chosen topic and explore their position relative to others. In the light of this they will give consideration to development of their final year contextualised personal study. Students will, in addition, extend their knowledge and understanding of a broad range of issues relevant to contemporary art and culture.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This module combines second and third year student led seminars on topics of research related to the history and present day context of contemporary art and its relationship to the student's studio practice. Individual research seminar content is to be prepared in consultation with the module convenor.
