Aims:
The aim of the dissertation is to provide an opportunity for students to embark upon appropriately extended research on a topic of their own choosing and to present their findings in a manner conducive to enabling an educated reader to understand the topic and the issues surrounding it. |
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module, students will be expected to demonstrate the ability to
organize and synthesize material gathered during their research present this material in a clearly structured form, paying due regard to the coherence of the argument, the relevance of supporting evidence, and the correct use of bibliographies and footnotes write accurately and fluently engage with critical debates surrounding the selected topic, where these are relevant edit and proofread to standards of scholarly accuracy |

Outline content:
Students are expected to identify a suitable topic for research in the field of French Studies, bearing in mind the dissertation word-length, the extent of their existing knowledge of the subject, and the facilities for research available to them. |
Brief description of teaching
and learning methods:
They must contact a supervisor in the Department whose field of expertise covers the topic in which they are interested and obtain from that person preliminary guidance and bibliographical advice. All students will be asked to submit to the Head of Department the title of the short dissertation for formal approval. The module consists primarily of independent study and writing but students are expected to keep their supervisor properly informed of the progress of their dissertation and to submit to him/her a detailed plan as soon as possible. |

Assessment:
Coursework Students submit a 5,000-word dissertation by noon on the Friday of Week 4 of the Summer Term of Part 2. Relative percentage of coursework: 100% Examinations Nil Requirements for a pass These are in accordance with the University's regulations. Reassessment arrangements Resubmission by 1 September. |
