Aims:
This module draws on the theoretical issues developed in the critical modules of the degree. The module aims: to develop students' production competencies by the realisation of a short practical project; to develop an understanding of the way in which creative processes relate to critical analysis; to extend skills of analysis and evaluation by relating critical and theoretical issues to theatrical or filmic decision making in practice.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students will be expected to:

  • demonstrate the critical, technical and organisational expertise required to organise a short production of a film or a piece of theatre;
  • relate practical decisions in film or theatre to theoretical critical and cultural ideas developed in earlier critical modules;
  • set out the critical and practical intentions for a theatrical or film production in the light of identified theoretical concepts and contexts, and taking account of defined production constraints;
  • document processes of production;
  • evaluate and analyse the outcome of a practical project critically, taking account of audience reception, the relationship of initial intentions to the final production, and levels of critical and creative success.

  • Additional outcomes:
    This module develops in students skills of leadership, particularly managerial and organisational skills. Decision-making and its consequences are central to the course. The module extends skills and competencies which are central to the degree: team work ; oral communication and group co-operation; library usage to assist in self-directed, independent work; appropriate deployment of research using printed and electronic resources: critical analysis of visual and written material and coherent argument; presentation of written work using IT.

    Outline content:
    Following the introduction to theatre and film/video production in Part One, students in this unit will choose to pursue practical work in either film/video or theatre. Drama students direct, under supervision, a short performance of a play, a section from or play or a devised piece. Film/video students develop, under supervision, a short film or video project. The work is documented and evaluated throughout the process.

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    Within the two hour class, teaching styles will be flexibly used and may vary week by week. The practical options are developed partly through group workshops and partly by individual tutorials with the supervising tutor. The first term of the module comprises workshops and tutorials aiming towards developing the project and the second term completing the practical piece. Production work on the options is allocated a nominal hourage but schedules and access to facilities are overseen by the unit convenor or supervising tutor.
