Aims:

  • Gain further insight and understanding of requirements for good primary teaching
  • Understand the nature of a professional approach to teaching and learning
  • Develop teaching skills appropriate to the primary classroom
  • Gain experience in working with individual children and groups

  • Assessable learning outcomes:

  • make positive and respectful relationships with children and adults
  • demonstrate a professional attitude
  • demonstrate an ability to plan and evaluate group lessons and part whole-class
    sessions in the three core subjects and your subject specialism
  • gain and hold children's attention in small group sessions
  • demonstrate the potential to organise and manage whole class
    activities
  • show willingness to respond as a reflective practitioner to constructive
    criticism and discussion of areas for professional development

  • Additional outcomes:
    To enable students to confirm their commitment to primary teaching and gain experience of working at Key Stage 1.

    Outline content:
    Attendance at school placement for 4 weeks working alongside an experienced teacher. Discussion with professional colleagues in school, planning and teaching small groups in core curriculum subjects and specialism. Taking some responsibility for whole class activity, and becoming involved with the wider life of the school. Supporting individual children in small groups in fulfilling tasks set by the teacher. Working to the National QTS Standards.

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    The student will work alongside an experienced teacher and will implement the ideas and principles met during one or all of the taught modules ED1CE; ED1CX; ED1CS and ED1PF. They will learn through discussion, reflection, teacher feedback and gaining practical experience.
