Aims:
The module aims to introduce students to the research process, and to develop their understanding of the relevance of research for informing practice in the work place. It is intended that students completing this module will have a basic knowledge of the principles and practice of research, in particular action research, and be able to undertake an independent research project in the work place.

Assessable learning outcomes:

  • Describe the basic principles and methodology of action research
  • Examine existing research in a chosen subject and identify how it might be applied to professional practice
  • Critically reflect upon their observations of work place practice
  • Collect data on professional practice from the work place and interpret it effectively
  • Design a work-based research project

  • Additional outcomes:

  • Describe the basic principles of research and the motivations for undertaking it

  • Outline content:

  • What is research? An introduction to the research process, the reasons for undertaking research, and how it might be used to inform professional practice
  • Introduction to action research methodology, focusing on how to develop reflective practice into action research
  • How to design and structure a research project
  • Methods of collecting data and the principles of interpreting it
  • Using published sources to complement action research
  • Drawing conclusions from research and developing practical solutions for application in professional practice

  • Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    Theory and methods will be presented in lectures/workshops. The research project will be undertaken in the workplace, with the support of individual or small group tutorials, which may be online where appropriate.
