Aims:
This module aims to introduce students to the management of information systems. This module may be appropriate for students wishing to pursue a career in management consultancy. |

A management view of databases, networks, software, hardware A management viewpoint on some core techniques; data analysis, functional decomposition, business process re-engineering, and the management of change The management of Information and Knowledge The telecommunications revolution The service industry revolution and the role of teleworking and offshore sourcing Project management with special reference to Prince II Office automation and electronic communications Business continuity planning Social and ethical implications of Information and Knowledge management Last year's trends, next year's trends |
Brief description of teaching
and learning methods:
This module has a strong emphasis on practical business examples taken from real life situations. Lectures provide the base material and use Powerpoint, overhead slides, live websites and the occasional video. These lead into seminars, which concentrate on case studies, where collaborative student teams work on practical management skills. A substantial handbook complements the module, and contains additional material, including a wealth of checklists, and also a recommended reading list. |

Assessment:
Coursework One 2,000 word essay in the Spring term. Relative percentage of coursework; Coursework has a total weight of 20% in the final assessment mark. Examination One 2-hour unseen written paper.Part 3 examinations begin in week 3 of the Summer term. Requirements for a pass 40%. Reassessment arrangements Re-examination for Finals takes place in September of the same year. |
