Aims:
The module aims to provide students with an understanding of key aspects of sustainable development and what this means for planning and development practice. |
Assessable learning outcomes:
After completing the lecture course, students should be able to:
Define the concept of sustainability and be aware of the different viewpoints which underpin it; Understand the role of planning and property development in the management of natural resources in the UK; and Discuss the strategies and tools used to conserve natural resources and environmental assets. |
Additional outcomes:
The module also aims to develop Web-based learning skills involving literature searching and research. |
Outline content:
The content is delivered through lectures which will review the following:
Definitions of Sustainability Planning, Development and Natural Resources Environmental and Sustainability Appraisal Sustainable Transport Sustainable Economic Development Greening the Development Process Ecological City Ideas |
Brief description of teaching
and learning methods:
The module will be delivered through a one-hour lecture each week. Selected module documentation (module outline, lecture notes, case studies, bibliography, Web-links, past exam papers, etc.) will be available on the University's Blackboard Web site. Use will be made of Web-based reports, electronic journal articles and internet sites with case study material. |
