Aims:
This module aims to provide knowledge of plant biochemistry relevant to ecology. The focus is upon the interactions that occur between plants and animals in the natural environment, and the biochemical reactions of plants to abiotic stresses. |
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the unit, it is expected that the students will be able to
Outline major biochemical interactions between plants and animals Have an understanding of the co-evolution of plants and animals Carry out extraction and analysis of some secondary compounds Interpret and report experimental data |
Additional outcomes:
Students will also gain:
Practical experience of biochemical laboratory practice |
Outline content:
Topics will include: relevant aspects of plant secondary metabolism; reactions to abiotic stresses; pollination; toxic defences; animal/plant hormonal interactions; insect feeding preferences; vertebrate feeding prefences; allelopathy; phytoalexins and disease resistance; pheromones. |
Brief description of teaching
and learning methods:
There will be one or two 50-minute lectures each week. Practical work and discussion sessions with two tests will take place, one mid-term and one in week 10. |
