Assessable learning outcomes:
Learning a range of topics concerned with power systems and drives. Students will be conversant with a range of electrical machines, and with the characteristics, specification and controllability of alternative drive systems.

Outline content:
This course deals with AC and DC electrical machines, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and the selection of power systems and drives with case studies.
Electrical Machines (10 hours lectures with tutorials Spring Term: Dr Khoo)
Introduction to the construction, theory, operation and characteristics of ac machines. Three Phase Power Systems: Analysis of Induction Machines, Starting techniques: Transformer Analysis.
Power Systems and Drives (20 hours lectures Spring Term: Dr Khoo and Prof Chaplin):
The selection of devices for applications that require some form of mechanical drive output: Specification: Devices; electro-magnetic (Variable Speed AC & DC motor drives), hydraulic and pneumatic. Control technologies. Initial cost, maintenance, reliability and efficiency: Case Studies.

M1: Induction Motor 3 hours (10%)

Penalties for late submission:
There will be a deduction of 10% for any work submitted up to one week after the original deadline for submission. Thereafter a mark of zero will be recorded.
Examinations :
One two and a half hour examination in June: 90%
Requirements for a pass:
40%
Reassessment arrangements:
Re-examination the following year.
