Assessable learning outcomes:
To learn materials mechanics aspects of the History of Technology. The student will understand the early development of metal technologies.

Additional outcomes:
Key skills in Problem Solving, Numeracy and Team Working.

Outline content:
Metals Technology (15 hours lectures plus 15 hours project work Autumn term: Dr. D. N. Sim):
The materials and processes of manufacturing metal artefacts, from ancient Greece to medieval times will be studied. Topics include: the seven metals of antiquity, mining, extraction, mechanisation of manufacture, joining methods, mass production, the development of hand tools, mechanical devices and metals in warfare.
