Level:

0

Terms in which taught:

Autumn, Spring and Summer

Module Convenor:

Dr MH Tinker

Pre-requisites:

Co-requisites:

Modules excluded:

Current from:

2005/6

Aims:
To provide a basic understanding in physics and its associated skills together with the skills of independent learning.

Assessable learning outcomes:
Knowledge and understanding to A-level equivalent of the major areas of physics including mechanics, fields, gravitation, electricity, circuits, magnetism, electromagnetism, vibrations, waves, optics, matter, heat, thermodynamics, atoms and nuclei.

Additional outcomes:
Ability to learn independently through reading, plan a study programme to meet deadlines, work flexibly and use a variety of learning resources.

Outline content:
The module covers how basic materials behave, from solids, liquids and gases to the smallest fundamental particles. It also looks at more abstract idea such as how electric fields and magnetic fields interact to produce forces and generate electricity. Complex mathematics allows us to work out how satellites orbit and bullets fall while in flight while understanding the electromagnetic spectrum show the wide range of uses (and dangers) of this energy source. The content is defined in terms of the Flexible Learning Approach to Physics modules.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The module consists of lectures, tutorials and laboratory work, with emphasis on independent study.
