Aims:

  • To equip students with the an advanced understanding of PC computer systems and their relationship to other architectures
  • To provide an opportunity for students to gain practical skills using industry standard equipment

  • Assessable learning outcomes:
    On successful completion of the module, students will be able to do the following:

  • Install hardware
  • Install software
  • Devise a service delivery plan
  • Explain how service delivery can be controlled
  • Describe what is expected of customer service provision
  • Compare PC architecture to other computer architectures (both past and present)

  • Additional outcomes:
    Students may be able to take professional qualifications such as:

  • OCR Level 3 Certificate for IT Practitioners (ICT Systems Support)
  • Units 1, 2 and 3
  • CISCO IT Essentials 2

  • Outline content:

  • set up PCs in typical organisational contexts
  • install and configure software used in the above contexts
  • the ways in which PCs and PC systems may be acquired (purchased, leased, outsourced), installed and configured
  • the ways in which users can be trained to use PC systems and supported in their use of PC systems (including the use of remote control and diagnostic software).
  • storage systems
  • alternatives in computer hardware design
  • comparing and contrasting the architecture of PCs with that of servers.

  • Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    The student will learn from a combination of on line materials, group lab work, and formal tutor input.

    The case study project will where possible be related to the work place.
