Aims:
This module aims to teach students the elements of the Latin language and give them skills to read Latin at an elementary level. |
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:
translate Latin at an elementary level; understand the elements of Latin grammar and vocabulary. |
Additional outcomes:
The module also encourages the development of skills useful for working in groups. In addition, students will be introduced to some aspects of ancient Latin literature and culture. |
Outline content:
The module will proceed by instruction in grammar and practice in translation. The text used is Reading Latin (P. Jones and K. Sidwell, CUP). We aim to cover the first three sections. |
Brief description of teaching
and learning methods:
The module will be taught in three seminars each week for a total of thirty hours each term. Students will be encouraged to participate in class activities and discussion. |

Assessment:
Coursework: There will be frequent tests and homework assignments on word-forms, vocabulary, syntactical constructions, and translation. These are formative only. Summative assessment will consist of a one-hour test taken in the Department at the beginning of the spring term. Relative percentage of coursework : 33% Examinations: One two-hour paper testing knowledge of word-forms, syntax, vocabulary, and translation skills. Requirements for a pass: A mark of 40% overall. Reassessment arrangements Re-examination in September. Coursework may not be resubmitted. |
