Aims:
By the end of this module students will have furthered their knowledge of German Studies through taking a range of courses at their exchange university and will also have gained experience of approaches to a variety of themes and subjects in a different university system.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of this module students will be able to:
demonstrate a wide range of vocabulary and idiom in language courses
demonstrate knowledge of a range of topics in courses taken at their exchange university
demonstrate an understanding of the conventions of essay-writing in the German university system.

Additional outcomes:
Students will also have gained essential experience of presenting their arguments in written and spoken German, and will have acquired insight into the differences between the university systems in Britain and Germany or Austria.

Outline content:
Students choose a number of courses at their host university, some in German as a foreign language, some on aspects of German culture, literature, history, society. The choice of courses is checked with the unit convenor at Reading and will ensure that the student obtains a total of 15-20 ECTS credits during the period in Germany/Austria. The best two of the certificates obtained (of which not more than one may be in German as a Foreign Language) are used to produce the mark for the unit. A short series of classes in the Summer Term of Year 2 will give students insight into the system of courses at German/Austrian universities.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The module will involve a variety of strategies for teaching and learning, depending on the exchange university attended and the types of courses followed; typical methods would be oral presentations, group-work, detailed research leading to the writing of long essays.
