Aims:
This module aims to develop practical and transferable skills within the context of, and appropriate to, the study of a particular period. [In this context, periods are distinguished as Medieval, Early Modern, or Modern.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:

  • locate and assemble bibliographic and other information by independent research, using IT as appropriate
  • organise material and articulate arguments effectively in different kinds of written exercises and orally
  • carry out a variety of skill-based exercises linked to, and appropriate to, the investigation of the specific period
  • identify and explain the particularities of sources and historical methodologies relating to study of the period

  • Additional outcomes:
    The module also aims to develop the student’s effectiveness in group situations.

    Outline content:
    The subject content is determined by the outline content of the co-requisite Period module. This skills module will take the form of class-based activity relating to the Period. Students will be required to prepare and present a number of exercises as directed by the module convener. These may include: literature search; literature review; source evaluation; statistical exercise; poster session; seminar paper; other forms of oral and written presentation. These activities will serve to emphasise, where appropriate, the distinctive nature and problems of sources for the period and the principal methodologies deployed by historians in studying them.

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    The module will be taught within the relevant period by means of seminars. In addition, students will be required to prepare for classes and carry out exercises.
