Aims:
The course is intended for students who wish to build on the level attained after about three year's study of German. It will develop all four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. |
Assessable learning outcomes:
At the end of the course students may expect to have developed the ability to communicate information and arguments of some complexity in German by speaking and writing at a level appropriate to a wide range of common personal and other situations, to make appropriate use of the dictionary, to apply correctly grammatical structures enabling more complex intentional, emotional and factual information to be given and sought. They will be able to express and defend opinions on a wide range of current and abstract issues. The course will involve the use of abstract and discursive material.

Additional outcomes:
Whatever the student's home department, he/she will be involved in regular group activities and role playing and will gain experience of public speaking and joint activities. Students will make progress through developing skills of self-study and application and will develop a deeper awareness of and sensitivity to a foreign culture. |
Outline content:
Examples of information extractable at this level are extended biographical details and personal interests forms of address, greeting, leave taking expressions of preference, apology, gratitude, pleasure, regret, annoyance, surprise, anticipation, sympathy, conflict social arrangements and requirements, food, drink, travel, accommodation, shopping, directions, simple telephone messages common items of personal and public interest matters of shared interest

Brief description of teaching
and learning methods:
Teaching methods are based on interactive language development tasks, including group work and role playing, and include the study of short texts, oral development work and listening comprehension exercises. Learning activities are supported by various media, including audio, video and, where appropriate, computer software. The course book will provide the basis for discussion and analysis in class. techniques of oral presentation and practice will improve oral skills. The module is taught as far as possible in the target language. |

Coursework: Four assessments (2 per term). Relative percentage of coursework: 50% Examinations: 2 hour end of year written exam 30% + oral/aural examination 20% Requirements for a pass Min. 40% overall. Reassessment arrangements Resit in September examinations period. |
