Aims:
This module aims to build on the basic knowledge of Modern Greek which students already possess. It will provide them with a more thorough understanding of the grammatical structures of Modern Greek, and allow them to communicate at a higher level.

Assessable learning outcomes:
The ability to communicate in Modern Greek by speaking and writing in grammatically correct structures. The student will be able to understand simple texts in Modern Greek both written and oral.

Additional outcomes:
Whatever the student's home department, he/she will be involved in regular group activities and role playing and will gain experience of public speaking and joint activities. Students will make progress through developing skills of self-study and application and will develop an awareness of and sensitivity to a foreign culture.

Outline content:
The student will have a basic understanding of more complex grammatical structures. They will develop their fluency of speech, their accent and their ability both to read and understand spoken and written Modern Greek. They will be able hold conversations in Modern Greek.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The course provides a systematic approach to acquiring essential grammatical structures in a communicative context. Teaching methods are based on interactive language development tasks, such as group work and role playing, and include the study of short texts, oral development work and listening comprehension exercises. Learning activities are supported by various media, including audio, video and, where appropriate, computer software. The module is taught as far as possible in the target language.

Relative percentage of coursework: 50%
Examinations: 2 hour end of year written exam 30% + oral/aural examination 20%
Requirements for a pass:
Min. 40% overall.
Reassessment arrangements:
Resit in September examinations period.
