Module version for:

2006/7

Aims:
The module aims to enable students to demonstrate a conceptual understanding of one particular aspect of typography and graphic communication, and to engage in an advanced scholarly study of the subject, which requires a full understanding of the relevant research techniques. This is in line with the Department's aim to produce fluent and articulate designers who are able to influence the development of the subject by demonstrating originality in the development or treatment of knowledge.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students should be able to:

  • locate, assemble and explain information on their subject through their own research
  • critically review and evaluate the literature of their subject
  • draw on the appropriate methodology for their subject
  • recognise the crafts of scholarship, i.e. demonstrate their practical understanding of how established research procedures are used in the discipline
  • organise complex material and articulate effectively in written form

  • Additional outcomes:
The module encourages the development of organisational skills and time management, through self-directed study.

    Outline content:
Preparation for the dissertation will consist of:

  • identifying the characteristics of good dissertations
  • bibliographical style
  • exploring sources
  • developing a proposal
  • writing a preliminary literature review
The subject of study is chosen through consultation with staff. Students may work with primary source materials, conduct interviews, and engage in empirical studies.

  • Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Initial preparatory work will involve briefings, exercises in small groups and self-directed study. This will be concentrated towards the end of the Summer term (Part 3).
In the Autumn and Spring terms of Part 4, drafts will provide the basis for a series of tutorial meetings with supervisors where contact hours will be determined by agreement between student and supervisor.
