Aims:

  • To support the development of an environment where children can develop a positive sense of self
  • To understand criteria for quality day care and childcare provision
  • To evaluate significant and emerging theories about the development of children’s sense of self

  • Assessable learning outcomes:

  • Develop and assess routines and interactions based upon sound theoretical concepts that promote a positive sense of self
  • Evaluate and reflect upon significant beliefs, values and assumptions and consider how they may influence children’s development
  • Evaluate and reflect upon the importance of adult’s role in promoting positive sense of self through awareness of children’s feelings and emotions and cultural differences
  • Identify and analyse a series of strategies for behaviour management on the basis of understanding the stages of the development of the personality

  • Additional outcomes:

  • Understanding role of family in the development of self-concept and personality
    The aims of this module have been specifically developed to meet the needs of practitioners working with young children. The assessed outcomes will provide evidence of attainment for the Early Years Sector Endorsed Foundation Degree.

  • Outline content:
    Theories of development relating to personality, self-concept, self-fulfilling prophesy; role of the adult; self-fulfilling prophesy; cultural and environmental factors, the beginnings of moral development, strategies for behaviour management Criteria to assess work-based practice

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    A range of centre based lectures, presentations, seminars and workshops will be used. These will link to school-based tasks and independent activities. Work – based learning will provide an essential contribution to achievement of the outcomes.

    Coursework
    Write a report on the identification and analysis of appropriate strategies for behaviour management of an individual child (40%)
    Evaluation of the effectiveness of settings’ routines (50%)
    Evidence of working at pass level in work-place (10%)
