Assessable learning outcomes:

  • By the end of this unit, students should be able to:
  • Understand the principles of training and there application
  • Effectively use training methods to devise training programmes for various athletic populations
  • Understand specific use of assessment and monitoring methods for athletes
  • Understand the principles and application of different training methods
  • Understand issues relating to burnout drop out and injury

  • Additional outcomes:
    This module also aims to encourage transferable skills:

  • Leadership: taking a role of coach: organising training seasonal training programmes, decision making; designating specific training principles.
  • Teamwork: formations and collective responsibility; achieving a set objective (between, coach, scientist and athlete)
  • Problem-solving: Deciding on the most appropriate training methods in order to achieve the aims of the individual or sports team.
  • Verbal communication: Learning to communicate effectively with athletes
  • Written communication: Writing up training sessions, planning training sessions and plans, developing a seasonal training plan.

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    Students will be required to attend all theoretical sessions. Students will have the opportunity to engage in reciprocal teaching, formulating ideas and work alone, in groups, or individually. Students will also be encouraged to contribute to planning and progression of training programme within their own sports.

    Students will write one essay of c.3500 words in the Spring term.

    Reassessment arrangements:
    Course work will be carried forward if it bears a confirmed mark of 40% or more. Where a student fails a piece of work it must be resubmitted no later than one month after the return of the original assignment.
