Aims:
To provide students with theories and methods for social work within a statutory framework.
To provide students with the opportunity to integrate theory and practice through a period of assessed practice.

Assessable learning outcomes:
Students will be able to:
1. Explore the relevant legal and policy mandate for social work intervention;
2. Recognize the rights of service users and carers;
3. Practice in a way that reconciles duties and powers to empower and protect those in need with concern for the rights of others including carers and agency staff;
4. Assess their specific and transferable skills, give illustrative examples and identify areas for development.
5. Identify their own development as a Social Worker through personal reflection.

    Assessment:
    Course work:
    i Preparation of a prototype CV. (pass/fail) – Autumn Term
    ii 3,500 word case study based on work with an individual, family or group, in the Part2 placement, to be submitted by 5th week in Summer Term.(100%)
    iii 70 day placement – all key roles evidenced (pass/fail)

    Relative percentage of coursework: 100%
    Penalties for late submission or non-submission: in accordance with University policy
    Examinations: None
    Requirements for a pass:
    An average mark of 40% in assignments ii) and in the Practice Portfolio a pass
    Reassessment arrangements:
    Only failed element has to be retaken.
    Re-examination by 1st September for written work.
    Reassessment of practice could be achieved by an extension of an existing placement for up to 30 days (by agreement with agency and examination board). Alternatively the examination board may agree a new 70 day placement to be completed by 1 October following. This would involve the student being course suspended. If any risk to service users or carers has been identified students will not be offered an additional placement opportunity.
