Aims:

  • To provide a basic understanding of the organisation, production and consumption of welfare in the UK
  • To critically examine the provision and regulation of welfare
  • To look at the development of policy in three key areas: poverty and social exclusion; disability; old age.

  • Assessable learning outcomes:
    The student will be able to :

  • Describe the different systems of welfare operating in the UK and the roles of the central players involved
  • Demonstrate an understanding of key debates and issues in contemporary welfare provision
  • Discuss the development of policy in the areas of poverty and social exclusion; disability and old age.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of ways in which policy may impact on practice.

  • Welfare providers: the family and informal care
  • Welfare providers: statutory agencies and the independent sector
  • Professions and bureaucracies in welfare - care; rationing and surveillance

  • User perspectives
  • Poverty and social exclusion
  • Social policy and disability
  • Social policy and old age

  • Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    Sessions will be a mixture of formal input with large and small group discussions.
