Aims:
To provide nurses with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage the problems presented by people who attend with minor illness and enable them to expand their range of clinical practice.
To establish an accepting learning environment that encourages students to explore, discuss and analyse issues relating to the assessment of minor illness.
To facilitate the students’ development of self-awareness and promote reflective, non-discriminatory practice, within the clinical setting.
To practice in a confident and safe manner in relation to minor illness.
To provide the opportunity for students to increase their skills in communication and health promotion.

Assessable learning outcomes:

  • On completion of the Course practitioners will be able to:-
  • Offer an appropriate consultation to patients with undifferentiated problems, make a diagnosis and treat, under patient group directions.
  • Enable patients to become more confident in their own treatment of self-limiting illness.
  • Demonstrate evidence-based practice by critically evaluating and utilising relevant research findings.
  • Recognise the limits of his/her competence and initiate the procedures for making appropriate referrals.
  • Evaluate clinical audit and its relevance to the assessment of minor illness.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse belief systems and critically analyse issues that may influence cultural expectations of individuals.
  • Evaluate the role of nurses in relation to minor illnesses and developments within the NHS.

    Outline content:

  • The course will have a strong practice focus and will contain:
  • Consulting skills, to include history taking
  • Principles of examination, focused upon physical examination
  • Principles of management to include, pharmacology, investigations, advice and treatment
  • Accountability and clinical governance
  • Socio/political issues in relation to nursing and minor illnesses
  • Critical incident analysis and reflection

  • Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    Both teacher-centred and student-centred approaches will be employed, depending on a number of influencing factors, e.g.; nature of topic, learning environment etc. Teacher-centred methods will include appropriately guided discussion and demonstrations, case studies, lectures and tutorials. Student-centred methods may include brainstorming; buzz groups, debate-discussion groups, interview, role play, seminars, workshops, clinical practice and relevant visits.

    It is envisaged that the strong androgogical emphasis will ensure that the student will be at the centre of the teaching process in order to develop skills that facilitate lifelong learning.

    Penalties for late submission of course work will be in accordance with University policy.

    Requirements for a pass
    Students must achieve the following in each element to pass this module:
    Written assignment: 40%
    Portfolio: Pass (marked on a Pass/Fail basis)
    OSCE 70%

    Reassessment arrangements

    For the written assignment the student will be required to resubmit the work within three months following confirmation of the result by the external examiner/examinations office.
    Students unable to demonstrate safe practice in the OSCE will be required to re sit this examination within three months.
