Aims:
1. To develop the nurse's knowledge and expertise to care for children with a health need in a community setting 2. To develop the nurse's critical understanding of the delivery of health care to children and their families from a social, political, environmental and cultural perspective 3. To develop a reflective practitioner who is competent to manage both human and material resources and innovative strategies for the provision and delivery of care. 4. To extend the nurses knowledge and skills to recognise the complexities of interagency working, and to develop a practitioner competent to work with health, social, education and voluntary agencies |

SPECIALIST PRACTITIONER COMMON CORE LEARNING OUTCOMES (United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (UKCC) Standards for specialist community nursing education and practice, April 1998) These are related to: CLINICAL NURSING PRACTICE CARE AND PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT CLINICAL PRACTICE LEADERSHIP CLINICAL DEVELOPMENT SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR COMMUNITY CHILDREN'S NURSING PRACTICE 1. Assess, plan, provide and evaluate specialist clinical nursing care to meet the care needs of acutely and chronically ill children at home and their carers 2. Assess, diagnose and treat specific health needs in accordance with agreed multi professional protocols 3. Initiate and contribute to strategies designed to promote and improve health in children, their families and community 4. Initiate action to identify and minimise risk to children and ensure child protection and safety, and 5. Initiate management of potential and actual physical or psychological abuse of children and potentially violent situations and settings. 6. To increase awareness of the responsibilities within their role in relation to the seven standards outlined in the National Service Framework- Mental Health and to develop skills and strategies for meeting those responsibilities |

Outline content:
The content is organised chronologically. The first term addresses the fundamental issues underpinning the practice of the CCN, term 2 building on this in relation to practice based examples of community children's nursing. Term 3 addresses the skills of the advanced practitioner in relation to the development of CCN teams and leadership issues. Throughout the module there is sociological, political, environmental and cultural influence and an emphasis on health promotion as well as meeting the needs of families where ill health is present. |
Brief description of teaching
and learning methods:
As students will come from a wide range of professional nursing experience, they will be supported in reflecting on experience and identifying individual learning needs. This will be facilitated by personal tutors, and by Community Practice Teachers in practice, through the use of learning contracts and reflective journals throughout the courseA wide range of teaching methods will be employed, including both teacher and student centred, as appropriate. The former will include guided discussion, lecture discussion and tutorials, and the latter, debate discussion groups, seminars, workshops, simulation and games. |

Assessment:
Coursework This module will be examined through the 4500 word component of the Professional Study, which will focus on a special area of professional practice and will evaluate the complex role of the community specialist practitioner. Legal and ethical issues will also be assessed within this study. Relative percentage of coursework: 100% Examinations None Requirements for a pass 40% Reassessment arrangements: Resubmission date of failed assignment to be agreed by board of examiners |
