2006/7 |
Aims:
The module aims to provide the students with a background in main group and transition metal chemistry. |
Assessable learning outcomes:
Students should be able to display a knowledge of the chemistry of the s and p block elements of groups 1, 2 and 17 and their compounds. They should have a fundamental understanding of the chemistry of the elements of the first transition series.
|
Additional outcomes:
Work on this module will improve students' practical and descriptive skills.
|
Outline content:
M J Almond (10 lectures) - Introduction to Systematic Inorganic Chemistry. Chemistry of the s- and p-block elements of groups 1, 2 and 17. C J Cardin (10 lectures) - d-Block Elements. Trends in physical and chemical properties. Brief survey of chemistry of Sc to Ni. Co-ordination compounds: ligands, geometries, isomerism |
