Aims:
The aim of this module is to develop high-level skills in critical evaluation and understanding of current research issues and methodologies within the field of clinical linguistics, and in designing, planning and implementing an independent research project, through writing a dissertation of 8,000 words.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that a student will have a detailed knowledge of the topic of the dissertation and will be able to:

• critically analyse and evaluate a range of relevant literature in a specified field of clinical linguistics;
• formulate research questions, hypotheses, and predictions for the research outcome based on theory and previous research findings;
• make use of clinical research methodology and statistical tools to analyse clinical data;
• consider the implications of the research outcome for clinical practice;
• use a recognised citation style;
• present the dissertation in a manner that is clear, logical and well-written.

Additional outcomes:
It is also expected that students will be able to:
• develop personal responsibility and initiative in planning, managing and executing a research project professionally;
• make decisions during unforeseen and complex situations as the research progresses and develop self-reliance and -direction in addressing and solving problems.

Outline content:
Dissertation research areas and approaches are wide-ranging, and cover all areas of clinical linguistics (e.g., child language development in typically developing and impaired populations, adults with acquired speech and/or language disorders, adult second language learners).
