Aims:
To provide the knowledge and understanding necessary to examine various contractor procurement systems and documentation and to prepare Bills of Quantity and use Standard Methods of taking off quantities, within a financial administration context.

Assessable learning outcomes:
Competency and accuracy in

  • taking off quantities from drawings
  • writing contractually unequivocal descriptions of construction operations
  • producing contract documentation
  • Valuing construction work and the effect of disruption and delay

    Outline content:

  • Contractor procurement; Systems, documentation, tender procedures.
  • Documentation. Preparation methods. Bills of Quantity, preparation methods and processes. Standard Methods. Taking off quantities.
  • Financial administration and settlement of contracts. Interim valuations. Final Accounts. Delays and disputes. Claim preparation and settlement.

    Assessment:
    Coursework :
    Three assignments - one taking-off exercise, on Bill of Quantities preparation and one Final Account preparation.
    Relative percentage of coursework : 100%
    Penalties for late submission :
    There will be a deduction of 10% for any work submitted up to one week after the original deadline for submission. Thereafter a mark of zero will be recorded.

    Requirements for a pass :
    40%
    Reassessment arrangements :
    Re-submission of failed assignment or assignments by the first day of September.
