Aims:
To introduce and devlop the ideas and methods of vector analysis; to motivate, describe and analyse methods for solving linear and non-linear equations. |
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students are expected to be able to:
understand and be able to apply the concepts of vector analysis; apply techniques in numerical linear algebra and error analysis to systems of linear equations; analyse and apply iterative methods for non-linear equations to appropriate problems. |
Additional outcomes:
Students will acquire skill in using numerical analysis software. |
Outline content:
The first half of the module is devoted to the study of vector calculus. The second half of this course introduces techniques in numerical linear algebra for the solution of systems of linear equations and also iterative techniques such as Newton's method for non-linear equations. |

Assessment:
Coursework Two pieces of assessed work in each of the autumn and spring terms Relative percentage of coursework : 20% Penalties for late submission For pieces of work contributing more than 10%: deduction of 10 marks (out of 100) up to one week after the deadline, thereafter a mark of zero. Examinations A three hour exam requiring the answers to four questions from six. This contributes 80% of the overall assessment. Requirements for a pass A mark of 40% overall. Reassessment arrangements Re-examination in August/September only. |
