Module version for:

2006/7

Aims:
To introduce and devlop the ideas and methods of vector analysis; to motivate, describe and analyse methods for solving linear and non-linear equations.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students are expected to be able to:

  • understand and be able to apply the concepts of vector analysis;
  • apply techniques in numerical linear algebra and error analysis to systems of linear equations;
  • analyse and apply iterative methods for non-linear equations to appropriate problems.

  • Additional outcomes:
    Students will acquire skill in using numerical analysis software.

    Outline content:
    The first half of the module is devoted to the study of vector calculus.
    The second half of this course introduces techniques in numerical linear algebra for the solution of systems of linear equations and also iterative techniques such as Newton's method for non-linear equations.

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    Lectures supported by problem sheets, directed reading and practicals
