Module version for:

2007/8

Aims:
This module aims to introduce students to the use of archives and collections as a research tool, with particular emphasis on the collections within the Department and University.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students should be able to:

  • identify appropriate approaches to analyzing archival or other collected material
  • apply data collection techniques

  • Additional outcomes:
A working knowledge of the construction of FileMaker Pro databases
A familiarization with the Department and University collections
An appreciation of issues surrounding the handling and display of artefacts

    Outline content:
A mixture of seminars and workshops introducing the collections and techniques involved, together with small-group tutorials to monitor progress on the assignments.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Students will be given an overview of Department and University collections and archives. Selecting a topic, they will develop a FileMaker Pro database to record relevant information about items relating to this topic from an approved collection (technical support will be offered). They will make short seminar presentations discussing their decision-making process, and describing the analytical techniques they will apply to the data. The submission of the database and supporting documentation will constitute 1 assignment. The second assignment will typically be an essay (2,500 words) drawn from the analysis but students may propose that this is substituted by, for example, a small display of material with associated written material (labelling/catalogue/handlist).
