Aims:

  • To develop understanding of the formal language of art
  • To enable communication and expression through artistic techniques
  • Gain insight into 20th and 21st Century issues in art and design
  • Develop oral communication skills as part of a group

  • Assessable learning outcomes:

  • Effective use of artwork as a communication medium.
  • Good understanding of art and design issues relating to the 20th and 21st Century
  • Suitable reference to individual artists who have contributed to artistic development in the 20th and 21st Century

  • Additional outcomes:
    Seminars will provide the opportunity for students to participate in group discussion and debate on issues raised in lectures. The seminars will provide a platform for students to develop their oral communication skills.

    Outline content:
    The content of this module allows students to develop their own art practice in a broad range of mediums under the guidance of tutors. The lecture and seminar programme and independent research requirements will extend students' knowledge and understanding of modern and contemporary art. Individual artists will be studied in the context of avant-gardism and the various related movements which have characterised developments in 20th and 21st century art and design.

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    There will be a variety of lectures, seminars and directed reading. Guided independent research will also take place in terms 1 and 2. Students will undertake a research visit in Term 2.
