There will be discussion and analysis of models of writing in each of the forms used, but priority will be given to practical writing activities. The importance of students' editing and revision of work will be emphasised throughout. Students will also be encouraged to reflect on how craft and creativity can be stimulated in children's writing through the application of techniques used during the unit.
The unit begins with an introductory writing workshop and then moves on to consider different forms of prose, poetry and dramatic writing. At the end of the unit, a group anthology of writing is published which is selected and edited by students.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The course will consist entirely of a series of practical seminars and workshops, consisting of tutor-led reading, writing and discussion activities related to different literary and non-fiction genres. There will be one presentation by a visiting professional writer..
