Aims:
To develop knowledge and understanding of:

  • The characteristics of a positive environment to support children and promote learning
  • Statutory and non – statutory health and safety requirements in education and childcare settings
  • The role of the professional in maintaining a positive environment
  • How environments influence learning and development

  • Assessable learning outcomes:

  • Recognise how statutory and non – statutory health and safety requirements affect work based practice
  • Initiate actions in the work place which will motivate either the children, the staff or both
  • Develop creative work based practice
  • Appraise practice to ensure non – discriminatory practice

  • Management of children’s health and well-being in a setting
  • Health and safety awareness
  • The importance of anti-discriminatory practice in creating a positive environment
  • The role of the professional
  • Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
  • How the use of displays and resources contribute to learning and development
  • Colour and creativity for a positive environment
  • Criteria to assess work-based practice

  • Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    A combination of lectures, seminars, group discussions peer presentations, case studies, simulations and independent research will enable the learner to reach the intended outcomes Work – based learning will provide an essential contribution to achievement of the outcomes.
