Aims:

  • To access, read and comprehend secondary research which is relevant to childcare and education
  • To integrate child observation and assessment (primary research) with current and emerging theories and explore their relevance to current practice
  • Show awareness of individual needs and typical and atypical patterns of learning and development
  • To understand how external factors affect children’s learning

  • Assessable learning outcomes:

  • Critically assess relevant current and competing theories and research in relation to observations and assessment
  • Evaluate the impact of external factors on children’s learning and / or development
  • Understand the impact of individual differences on children’s learning and / or development
  • Formulate an individual research plan, conduct the research and present the findings
  • Reflect upon and modify own practice in response to current research and personal development

  • Additional outcomes:

  • Apply knowledge of research methodology and data analysis
  • Demonstrate awareness of ethical issues in relation to conducting research

  • Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    Teaching will be through a combination of seminars, presentations and online learning. Learners will be expected to participate in discussion and evaluation of current learning and development theories. They will also be expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study in order to meet the assessment criteria. Work – based learning will provide an essential contribution to achievement of the outcomes.

    Research based project (maximum 5000 words) (90%)
    Note: Students will have produced, and received feedback on, a comprehensive plan for this project in module ED2FRM Research Methods for Developing Professional Practice, prior to commencing this assessment
    Evidence of working at pass level in work-place (10%)
