Aims:
To introduce students to a range of theories and empirical studies concerning human growth and development beyond childhood |
Assessable learning outcomes:
Students will be able to:
1. Identify the critical contribution that psychological and sociological perspectives can make to a fuller understanding of human growth and development in the adult 2. Develop a fuller understanding of the extended ‘ages’ of the adult 3. Develop critical observational skills in the context of how adults function within their social and cultural environment 4. Practice the role of observer in naturalistic and quasi naturalistic settings 5. Be reflective and critical of theoretical perspectives about the life-span in the light of empirical observations

1. Reflect on aspects of their own development and the use of self with regard to social work practice 2. Develop interviewing skills

Outline content:
Psycho-social approaches to theories of human development, change and transition in the context of the life-course from childhood to old-age Methods of analysis of the social and psychological environments in which adults operate, incorporating notions of difference and diversity Exploration of significant issues adults encounter during their life-transition Interviewing
