Aims:
To provide Speech and Language Pathology students with an understanding of principles of animal biology to serve as an introduction and background to their later studies of anatomy and physiology.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the Autumn Term it is expected that the student will be able to:

  • Describe the structure and function of eukaryotic cells
  • Explain the properties and significance of enzymes
  • Describe structure and function of mammalian systems including alimentary canal, respiratory system, blood.
  • Describe features of nervous and endocrine systems as a means of co-ordination in animals

    Outline content:
    This course is designed for Speech and Language Pathology students to provide them with knowledge and understanding of cell organisation and aspects of mammalian anatomy and physiology necessary for their later studies. The course is suitable for those who may have little or no background in animal biology as well as those who may have studied biology at 'A' level. The course is expected to be of considerable value to students in their later medical studies and at the same time enjoyable in its own right.

  • Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    2 lectures each week.
    Weekly surgery tutorials provide an opportunity for discussion of lecture material and for learning in small groups.
