CH0CHE: Chemistry

Module Provider:

Chemistry, School of Chem, FoodBi and Pharm

Number of credits:

40 [20 ECTS credits]

Level:

0

Terms in which taught:

Autumn, Spring and Summer

Module Convenor:

Dr EM Page

Pre-requisites:

Equivalent of at least a good standard in GCE O-level or GCSE Chemistry or Combined Science.

Co-requisites:

Modules excluded:

Module version for:

2007/8

Aims:
The module aims to provide the students with an understanding of the basic principles of general chemistry to allow them to proceed to Undergraduate studies in related subjects.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students should be able to

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the topics outlined below to a standard equivalent to A level.
  • Be able to answer questions to the same standard on any of the topics outlined below.
  • Show a reasonable level of competence in basic practical laboratory techniques.
  • Present their practical workings in a formal scientific report.

  • Additional outcomes:
Students will show an improvement in communication skills through small-group work.
Students will gain competence in the manipulation and interpretation of numerical data. They will be able to record results accurately and draw logical conclusions from them.

    Outline content:
Topics in inorganic chemistry include: structure and bonding, the periodic table and trends in properties of the elements therein and the chemistry of selected elements. In physical chemistry topics include the gas, liquid and solid states, energy changes, chemical equilibrium and kinetics. Organic chemistry covers all major functional groups in carbon based molecules.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Theory classes involve teaching and class discussion. A two hour practical session is held in the laboratory each week; students perform a series of experiments under supervision and are expected to write up a laboratory report after each one.
