Aims:
The aim of this module is to introduce the students to broad phonetic transcription of English words and phrases.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:

  • produce a broad phonemic transcription of a passage in English;
  • indicate processes of connected speech (assimilation, coalescence, elision, liaison);
  • indicate suprasegmental information (stress, tonality, tonicity).

  • Additional outcomes:
    Students will learn to use computer software for the transcription of English.

    Outline content:
    This module will introduce the students to broad phonetic transcription of segmentals and suprasegmentals in English speech. Students will be trained in producing a transcription from colloquial speech, and will learn how to indicate connected speech processes (assimilation, elision, coalescence, liaison) and suprasegmental features such as stress and intonation.
