Aims:
The aims of the module are that the student should further their understanding of typical and atypical development; and of theory and research in stereotyping, categorisation and intergroup relations.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module the student will be able to:

  • Show knowledge of theory and research in aspects of developmental and social psychology, in the form of written examination answers.

  • Additional outcomes:

    Outline content:
    Developmental psychology: aspects of typical and atypical development, for example in children with Down's syndrome, autism or Williams' syndrome. Social psychology: the self, stereotyping and categorisation, intergroup relations.

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    (a) Lectures on developmental and social psychology.
    (b) Recommended reading in developmental and social psychology.

    One-hour unseen multiple-choice examination at end of Autumn Term (35%). One-hour unseen essay type examination in Summer Term (65%).
    The examinations will require students to show knowledge of both developmental and social psychology.

    A mark of 40% overall
    Reassessment arrangements
    Re-examination in August/September.
