Module version for:

2007/8

Aims:

  • To continue to train clinicians to implement one evidence-based psychological treatment to an extremely high standard with increasingly complex cases
  • To identify the complicating factors that are preventing treatment progress using formal review methods
  • To train clinicians in supervision
  • To train clinicians in the effective dissemination of evidence-based psychological treatments

  • Assessable learning outcomes:
Students will be able to demonstrate the ability:

  • To understand one specific evidence-based psychological theory and treatment in sufficient depth that it can be applied to complex patients with multiple co-occurring problems. This will be assessed via the case reports.
  • To implement a protocol-driven evidence-based psychological treatment under constraints (e.g., reduced number of sessions.) This will be assessed via the modified Cognitive Therapy Scale
  • To critically evaluate their own use of evidence-based psychological theories and treatment for the specific disorder in which they are being trained. This will be assessed via the case reports.
  • To constructively discuss and appraise the clinical work of themselves and others presented in small discussion groups. This will be assessed via the modified Cognitive Therapy Scale.
  • To disseminate evidence-based psychological treatment effectively by presenting their work within and beyond the supervision group. This will be assessed by feedback on presentations within and beyond the supervision group.
  • To supervise clinicians effectively. This will be assessed by feedback from a supervisee.

  • Additional outcomes:

  • Students will obtain supervision on difficult cases
  • A training log specifying the length of study, number of taught hours and a record of the lecturers, tutors or mentors participating in a therapist’s training must be kept by the student.

  • Outline content:

  • Clinical teaching/supervision will be given on every patient seen in on the placement by an expert in delivering that specific evidence-based psychological intervention.
  • Clinical placement comprising a minimum of 4 patients with both the specific disorder that is being targeted and two other types of problems i.e., the caseload will have included at least three types of problems.
  • Discussion and peer supervision groups throughout.
  • Peer Supervision of other student’s caseload
  • Supervision within their own clinical setting

  • Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Direct discussion of theoretical material relevant to patients within supervision context; clinical placements; ‘homework’ to plan intervention for next therapy session, seminars. Details of supervised clinical practice and case mix will be recorded in a training log. Students will be encouraged to submit a paper for presentation at local and national conferences regarding the implementation of evidence-based psychological treatments in real world settings. There will be 45 face-to-face contact hours; students will be taught in pairs or maximum a group of 3. In addition, students will have approximately 100 contact hours with patients in this module (20 days @ 5 hours each day). A minimum of 4 and a maximum of 10 patients will be seen in this module.

    Contact hours:

      Autumn Spring Summer
    Lectures
    Tutorials/seminars
    Practicals
    Other contact (eg study visits)

    Total hours

    Number of essays or assignments
    Other (eg major seminar paper)

    Assessment:
    * Regular clinical assessment via standardised videos and supervision by listening to audio or video tapes. This will be formally assessed at the end of the module via modified Cognitive Therapy Scales (see www.beckinstitute.org) which is the standard instrument in the field. The Cognitive Therapy Scale will be modified depending on the evidence-based psychological treatment being used and the disorder for which it is being used (e.g., for bulimia nervosa, implementation of key specific components of the protocol would be rated.) Given that the number of sessions for complex patients is suboptimal, the modified scale will allow for a rating of the student’s ability to focus on the key areas. The modified scale also has a section for the supervisor to rate the student’s ability to constructively discuss and appraise the clinical work of themselves and others presented in small discussion groups. The progress of all patients will be assessed by giving symptom measures pre- post treatment.
    * Two case studies of the patients being treated (2000-3000 words each)
These case studies will allow the assessment of the student’s depth of understanding of the specific evidence-based psychological theory and treatment by assessing how well it has been applied to complex patients with multiple co-occurring problems. The case report will also allow for an assessment of the student’s own critical evaluation of their use of evidence-based psychological theories and treatment for the specific disorder in which they are being trained.
    * Feedback on supervision and presentations provided by supervisees. This will be assessed at the end of the module within the supervision group.
Clinical assessment will be worth 40% of the final mark, the case studies will be worth 20% of the final mark each, and the feedback on presentations and supervision will be worth 20%.
    Relative percentage of Coursework: 100%
    Penalties for late submission:
    In accordance with University Policy
    Requirements for a pass:
50% average with no individual assignment achieving less than 50%.
    Reassessment arrangements:
Students who do not obtain the required pass mark in the assessed work will be given the opportunity to resubmit, on one further occasion, any individual assessment that has been failed. The re-sit grade cannot exceed 50%.
