Aims:
To aquire knowledge of the construction industry, the use of materials in the context of historical changes in construction methods and the physical and chemical characteristics of materials and components used in modern construction.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students should:

  • identify the performance characteristics of construction materials and components.
  • appreciate the use of a range of common and innovative materials
  • assess the suitability of materials and components in place
  • appreciate how components are configured and incorporated into buildings.
  • appreciate the environmental implications of materials use
