Aims:
The aim of this module is to develop a sound understanding of the design, development, and evaluation of GUI, web and multimedia based products. The focus of the module is placed on designing usable and accessible products.

Assessable learning outcomes:
Knowledge and application of good design practices for GUI and web-based interface design;
The ability to critically appraise website and other interface designs with regards to usability, accessability and fitness for purpose;
Practical experience of designing and developing websites;
Knowledge of basic multimedia concepts, and of the major issues associated with the design and production of high quality digital multimedia systems.

Additional outcomes:
Practical experience of using HTML and/or other programming languages/applications to design and develop websites.

Outline content:
The course discusses the recent rise of graphic and other techniques as a means towards 'user friendly' computing. User needs analysis, guidelines for effective interface design, and evaluation techniques for user interfaces are among the topics discussed. Recent developments in digital multi-media systems and the production of such systems are also explored and discussed.

Assignment involving the design and implementation of a subject-specific web site and associated report
