Aims:
This field class module is designed to introduce students to the techniques and methodologies of Environmental Science analysis in the field. The principles of managing the environment will also be included.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of this field class module students will be able to: undertake a hazard assessment of a locality prior to commencing work; systematically record relevant environmental data, in the field, using a field notebook and data analysis sheets as appropriate. Recognise the relationships between geology, soil development and vegetation and how these can vary. Analyse the hydrological regime of an area. Recognise the effects of human activity, such as extractive industry, farming or landfill/reclamation on an area and how the local environment can be managed.

Additional outcomes:
Ability to work reliably and consistently in sometimes adverse conditions. Ability to meet deadlines; interpersonal skills including co-operation and supportiveness.

Outline content:
This seven day field class will visit a number of localities chosen to illustrate the interactions between the components of the Earth system.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This module consists of six days of fieldwork with students divided into small groups, each of which is supervised by a member of staff. Students are required to complete work sheets and field notebooks which are assessed during the field class. Each evening there will be a short briefing to review the days work, and also to introduce the following days programme. Students will be required to give a short team presentation on one aspect of the field work during the evening. The final day consists of an open book examination prior to departure home. There will be a charge for accommodation and food on the field class.

Assessment:
Coursework
Worksheets for each day of field work will be assessed. These will contribute 40% of the total module marks.

Penalties for late submission
Penalties for late submission of course work will be in accordance with University policy.
Examinations
A one and a half hour open book examination with six compulsory questions will be held on the final morning of the field class prior to departure home.
