Aims:
Compulsory core language work in Part 2 is divided into three complementary strands which aim to consolidate and to further comprehension, appreciation and production of written and spoken French within a context of subject areas relevant to contemporary France. Students will be expected to develop the necessary skills to use the Internet to practice grammar.
Successful completion of the module helps equip students with the linguistic skills required for the period of residence in France or a Francophone country, and enables them to go on to study Advanced Language Skills in their Final Year.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students should have:

  • improved and extended their skills in written French via a variety of structured exercises
  • enhanced their awareness of and ability to reproduce given registers and styles
  • developed their grammatical competence, oral and aural comprehension skills, and built up vocabulary including that pertaining to residence abroad.

    Additional outcomes:
    This module also aims to encourage the development of oral communication/exposé and pair/ group presentation skills, as well as enabling students develop their linguistic skills.

    Outline content:
    Development of language skills within contexts evoking issues and themes pertinent to contemporary France. Exercises are structured around authentic materials drawn from a wide variety of journalistic, audio and more literary sources. Students are required to complete assignments designed to test comprehension, reformulation, grammatical competence, sensitivity to register and reactive writing skills.

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    There will be 23 hours of Oral/Audio-Visual Comprehension classes, 23 Travaux Pratiques classes and 20 Grammar lectures distributed as follows:
    Grammar - 1 hour per week in Autumn and Spring terms
    TP - I hour per week for 23 weeks
    Oral - 1 hour per week in the Autumn and Spring terms and 2 hours per week for 3 weeks of the summer term.

    Assessment:
    Coursework:
    Students will complete 20 - 22 assignments (of which the best 10 graded will count towards the coursework mark) and some ungraded but registered Grammar exercises.

    Relative percentage of coursework: 30%

    Examinations:
    One two-hour written examination.

    Requirements for a pass:
    40%

    Penalties for late submission
    10% of the total marks available will be deducted where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline). Once this period has elapsed, a mark of zero will be recorded.

    Examinations:
    One two-hour written examination comprising two exercises.
