Aims:
This module aims to provide students with an introduction to the Spanish language, concentrating specifically on its communicative use in everyday situations.

Assessable learning outcomes:
The ability to communicate in Spanish by speaking and writing at a simple survival level, to make appropriate use of the dictionary and to apply simple grammatical structures. The student will be able to understand simple texts on familiar, everyday matters, and obtain specific details about such matters from signs, notices etc.

Additional outcomes:
Whatever the student's home department, he/she will be involved in regular group activities and role playing and will gain experience of public speaking and joint activities. Students will make progress through developing skills of self-study and application and will develop an awareness of and sensitivity to a foreign culture.

Outline content:
Examples of information extractable at this level are
personal biographical details
forms of address, greeting, leave taking
expressions of preference, apology, gratitude, pleasure, regret
social arrangements, food drink travel, accommodation, shopping, directions
common items of personal interest

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The course provides a systematic approach to acquiring essential grammar structures in a communicative context. Teaching methods are based on interactive language development tasks, such as group work and role playing, and include the study of short texts, oral development work and listening comprehension exercises. Learning activities are supported by various media, including audio, video and, where appropriate, computer software. The module is taught as far as possible in the target language.

Assessment:
Coursework:
Four assessments (2 per term, one oral/aural, one written/reading).
Relative percentage of coursework: 50%
Examinations: 2 hour end of year written exam 30% + oral/aural examination 20%
Requirements for a pass
Min. 40% overall.
Reassessment arrangements
resit in September examinations period.
