Aims:

  • To promote an awareness of music as a subject that relates to other disciplines, from world and film music to analysis and aesthetics.
  • To encourage the comprehensive understanding of specific repertoire that is significant musically and culturally
  • To enable students to draw comparisons between instrumental and classroom teaching

    Assessable learning outcomes:

    • Demonstration on cultural, pedagogical and historical awareness in music

      • Learning how to present detailed items of written work

        • Critical observing and evaluating of instrumental/ vocal teaching

          Additional outcomes:

        • Increasing ability to respond to music related topics and making connections with the curriculum in primary schools
        • Developing a confident overview of the evolution of different musics

          Outline content:

        • Awareness of instrumental/vocal techniques of teaching
        • Detailed study of several aspects of music history
        • Introductory lectures concerned with music related topics

          Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
          Lectures, seminars and workshops. School visits as appropriate.

        Assessment:
        HSPP and MiC are assessed by the submission of an essay.
        IVP requires the submission of a teaching observation report, based on seminars and school visits (where appropriate).

        Requirements for a pass: 40%

        Reassessment arrangements: A similar assignment set by a date decided by the Examinations Board.
