Aims:
To give trainees a theoretical grounding in the key issues which affect teaching and learning in their Subject Method studies in both primary and secondary schools. Candidates will learn about practical teaching skills relevant to these issues and come to understand the links between theory and practice
Assessable learning outcomes:
A knowledge and understanding of the typical curricula and teaching arrangements in their chosen subject specialisim;
An understanding of the knowledge and experience children bring with them to the secondary school in relation to their chosen subject specialism;
A critical understanding of key issues affecting teaching and learning in their subject specialism, both in theory and in the context of schools;
An insight into the relationship between theory and classroom practice;
Practical teaching skills based on observation, experimentation and evaluation.

Collaborative study skills, observation, analysis and evaluation, group work, oral and written communication skills
Outline content:
Issues explored will include, for example, key theories relating to the teaching and learning of the subject; National Curriculum requirements; the place of the subject in the KS3 Strategy; observation and evaluation skills; the development of teaching resources; unit and lesson planning; interactive and collaborative teaching strategies; differentiation and inclusion.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
In the University, students will participate in a series of workshops and seminars led by University staff and visiting speakers. They may also be involved in student led seminars. Thy will be expected to prepare for and take an active part in seminars. Students will observe classroom work and analyse their observations in the light of background reading which will include curriculum documentation and theoretical texts.

Assessment:
Coursework
A critical and reflective report on the way the subject is represented in the curriculum and organisation of the primary school (S1H).
A 1500 word essay or equivalent (depending on subject variations) exploring an aspect of subject as a part of the school curriculum (S4H).
