Aims:
The module aims to provide an understanding of the key environmental and natural resource problems facing society with a focus on those linked to the agriculture, food and rural sectors of the economy. The module attempts to explain how environmental economics can be used to i) help understand the processes which have given rise to these problems and ii) to help identify appropriate policy measures to counteract them.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students will be able to:

  • outline in economic terms some of the key environmental and natural resource problems
  • explain the factors responsible for these problems
  • to categorise the range of policy options available to tackle these problems and assess their pros and cons

    2. Classification of natural resources
    3. The economics of resource depletion
    4. The economics of pollution
    5. Sustainable development
    6. Valuing the environment

    9. The Environment and business: Green management

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    Teaching will be delivered through a series of 10 two-hour lectures. Reading and exercises will be provided to reinforce understanding of the key principles and techniques within environmental economics.
